2025, The Stories I Want to Tell You, Greenwich House, NYC Andréa Connell, April Felipe, Kensuke Yamada
The Things I Want to Tell You, is a 3-person exhibition featuring the figurative works of April Felipe, Kensuke Yamada, and Andréa Keys Connell. These three artists share a love of storytelling- storytelling that helps to guide them and remind them that we are all connected.
As a first generation Caribbean American, April’s wall sculptures illustrate her desire for belonging and the complexity of such a task. Andréa Keys Connell’s grandparents were Holocaust survivors, and the collection of porcelain figurines they acquired after the war often inspire her sculptures which are reflections on the time that moves past objects. Kensuke Yamada emigrated from Japan to the US for college. He discovered early on that he could communicate most effectively, and universally, through his sculptures.
The Things I Want To Tell You is a contemporary portrait that represents three voices, from different backgrounds, varying landscapes and experiences, each with stories to tell- stories that aim to connect, and perhaps allow for a moment of humor, joy, and/or internal recognition.
With an understanding of the scale of the gallery space, each artist will exhibit 3-4 pieces. April will create wall pieces that frame the pedestal pieces by Kensuke and Andréa. The work will range in scale, from 10" to 3' tall. All of these artists create colorful figurative sculptures that, when taken in as a whole, will paint a vibrant illustration that begs for closer inspection. We imagine our pieces playing off of each other in an exciting way, that pulls the viewer into the unique pieces, and out to the exhibition as a whole image to take in.
